The short version
Chichén Itzá is about 2 hours 45 minutes from Playa by road, so every tour is a full day of 11 to 12 hours. Most add a swim in a cenote and a stop in Valladolid, a colonial town with a pretty main square, which breaks up the drive and makes the day worth it.
Which tour to pick
- Best value: the guided tour with Valladolid and Cenote Chichikan. Over 1,000 reviews and the lowest price.
- Easiest from Playa: the Chichén, Valladolid and cenote tour with buffet lunch, which departs from Playa.
- Most reviewed: the Chichén, cenote and Valladolid tour with lunch. Close to 9,000 reviews, hotel pickup in Playa and a budget price.
- You want two sites: Cobá and Chichén Itzá in one day. Cobá is wrapped in jungle and much quieter.
What to know before you go
- Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
- You cannot climb the main pyramid, El Castillo. Climbing has been banned for years to protect it.
- There is very little shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, and wear comfortable shoes.
- Check what the price includes. Some tours collect the entrance fees on the day, in cash.
- Around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the late-afternoon sun draws a serpent of light down the pyramid steps. Expect big crowds on those dates.
Can I go on my own?
Yes. With a rental car, the toll highway toward Valladolid is fast and well kept. Going on your own lets you arrive at opening time, before the tour buses. Without a car, a tour is easier and usually cheaper than a private driver.
Questions we get asked
Is Chichén Itzá worth the long day?
If it is your first time in the Yucatán and you like history, yes. If you only have one free day, Tulum and the turtles at Akumal are closer and less tiring.
Is it good for kids?
Older kids usually love it. With toddlers, the long bus ride and the heat are hard, so consider Tulum instead.
What should I wear?
Light clothes, a hat and walking shoes. Pack a swimsuit and a towel for the cenote.
Can I combine Chichén Itzá with Tulum?
Not comfortably in one day. They are in opposite directions from Playa. Cobá and Chichén Itzá together is the realistic two-site day.
